The Journey: 5. An inspiring leader in the field

Humanitarian trauma surgery is a very specialized field. Although there are many great healthcare worker doing just that, it can be hard to identify ONE inspiring leader or expert. After a long research period, I discovered Dr. Harvey Hawes who's graduated from University of Calgary with a bachelor in cellular and molecular biology, a doctorate of medicine, and master degree in respiratory physiology. Furthermore, he's trained as a general and acute care surgeon at the University of Alberta, and as a trauma surgeon in Houston, Texas. His broad background and vast area of knowledge is quite impressive.

Dr. Hawes moved on to work with Doctors Without Borders as a humanitarian trauma surgeon. Naturally, he didn't limit his impact to just that: becoming the Director of the Vancouver branch of ICChange, a healthcare non-profit that tries to reduce technological limitations in LMIC. Completing his pedigree with more advocacy and innovation as the co-founder of Metric Technologies Compagnies, Dr. Harvey Hawes is bound to have a profond and significant impact of the definition and standards of humanitarian care and especially humanitarian trauma surgery.
